Here are are top 10 tips to get you both ready!

  1. Make sure you label everything well in advance. There are some great nametags that you can iron on or stick on – and you can include pictures of their favourite animal/sport etc to help them identify their own belongings. It was always a football in our house!
  2. Stay positive! Being positive and enthusiastic about your child’s new experience can help them feel excited and confident aboutstarting school. We know it is hard, but don’t let them see you get upset.
  3. Start early! It is a big change for you and your little one, so preparation is key – for you both. Prepare together, talk to them about what to expect, read books about starting school – there are so many out there.
  4. Establish a routine! Reduce the morning stress by establishing a routine now before your child startsschool or nursery.  (Don’t forget to allow extra time for cuddles for the wobbly moments). Getting them used to a routine early will help them feel more comfortable and confident. With the best laid plans, it always takes longer with a little one, so it is good time-management practise for you both!
  5. Reduce separation-angst! Being away from you for the first time can be a huge step, so make sure you practise this before their first day. Practising this can help them feel more comfortable with being away from you. There may be tears on the day, but they won’t last long as there will be so many fun distractions at school.
  6. Pack a comfort item if allowed- a favourite toy or blanket, perhaps. This can help them feel more secure and comforted during the day – but be sure to label it and let the teacher know it is there!
  7. Meet the teacher! Hopefully, you will have met your child’s teacher before the first day to help your child settle and feel more comfortable and familiar with their teacher for increasing periods of time before the big day. Some schools offer home visits. Don’t miss this opportunity as it really will help them to make a bond with the new adult in their life.
  8. Be on time! Make sure you allow plenty of time to be on time for both drop-off and pick-up. It is incredible where the time goes so don’t lose track! It can be quite stressful for your child if they are the last one to be picked up.
  9. Stay connected! Make sure you ask your child’s teacher to keep you updated with how they are getting on, their progress, any special interests they show and any issues that arise. Staying informed of the subjects being taught also mean you can help progress their education still further with discussion and extra-curricular activities.
  10. Celebrate milestones! Learning and growing should be celebrated. Acknowledging your child’s milestones and achievements will help them feel proud and motivated, making learning a positive experience.

Good Luck in this new and exciting chapter!
