London is a city of many cultures – and many languages!
Many children are being raised bilingual, some learn even more than two languages from birth. One parent will stick to their language and the other parent to another. The trick is to never swap when with your child, even if they respond in the “wrong” language. Et voilá, they speak two (or more) languages just like that.
As a single parent – like myself – it’s a little different: You can either speak one language in your house and as soon as you leave, swap to the other. Or: You speak one language when you’re alone and the other when you’re around other people, which is what I do with my daughter. Fingers crossed, she’ll be fluent in English and German.
Did you know that we run German only music classes in Fulham? Perfect session for bilingual children or to introduce a second language. There are some very good classes in London to strengthen one parent’s native tongue but also introduce another language to your little one and the earlier you start, the more likely it will stick for good but also create a more native-like pronunciation.
So here are my top picks:
- Club Petit Pierrot (French)
- Ni Hao Pauletta (Mandarin and Cantonese)
- Caterpillar Music Fulham (German)
- Bilingual Beats (Spanish)
- Nanos Spanish (Spanish)
- Kidslingo (French and Spanish)
- Mini Bilingual (French and Spanish)
Viel Spaß beim Entdecken 😉
